So, I’ve been messing around with this OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, the one with the see-through back. Let me tell you, it’s been quite a ride.
First off, I started digging around for info on this thing. I wanted to know all the ins and outs, you know? What I found out is that it’s powered by this Omega Calibre 3861 engine. Sounds fancy, right? And get this, it’s got a 50-hour power reserve. That means you don’t have to wind it every day. And, of course, it’s got your basic hour, minute, and second hands.
Getting Started
I decided I was gonna get this thing, so I went online, and I managed to find it on some official-looking shop. I spent some time staring at the pictures and reading all the descriptions. They were talking about how the caseback is thinner than any other Speedmaster caseback, ever. They even said it was redesigned from the ground up, whatever that means.
Once I finally got it in the mail, I was pretty impressed. It’s a good-looking watch, no doubt. It’s 42mm across, not too big, not too small. And it’s stainless steel, so it feels solid. The black dial has these three little dials for the chronograph, which is just a fancy word for a stopwatch. The whole thing is covered by a domed crystal, which is supposed to be pretty tough.
Opening it up
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. I wanted to take a peek inside, ’cause, why not? But I read somewhere that if you mess up opening the caseback, you can really screw up your watch. So, I did some more research and found out you need a special tool, a three-pronged opener. I guess you can use something else, but I didn’t want to take any chances. I mean, I just spent all this money on a new watch, right?
It seems like there are a few options for see-through casebacks. This one guy, Thomas Preik, makes some that are supposed to be pretty good. I didn’t go that route, though. Mine came with the transparent back already on it. Some folks were talking about custom engravings on the caseback, but mine just has the standard stuff. “Flight-qualified…” and all that.
The Movement
After fiddling with it for a while, I figured out how to use the chronograph. It’s pretty cool, actually. And the transparent caseback is a nice touch. You can see all the little gears and springs moving around. It’s like a tiny little city in there. I did find some posts on other sites that talked about using some special type of light, some “Super-LumiNova” stuff for the hands, but mine doesn’t seem to have that. I mean, it glows in the dark, but not like how they were talking about. Either way, it’s a real conversation starter. I’ve had a few people ask me about it already. They’re always impressed when I show them the back. It’s like a little magic trick, or something.
