I have been collecting watches for years, and I’m always on the lookout for unique pieces that catch my eye. The other day, I was browsing online and stumbled upon this OMEGA Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer watch. I’d heard a little about it before, something about it being able to track time on both Earth and Mars. That sounded pretty cool, so I started digging deeper.
OMEGA and the European Space Agency
It turns out that OMEGA made this watch with help from the European Space Agency (ESA). I guess it makes sense to partner with the experts when you’re designing a watch meant for space exploration! Anyway, I read that the case is made of this grade 2 titanium, which I assume makes it both lightweight and super strong, and it runs on a quartz movement. Now, I’m usually more into mechanical movements, but for a specialized watch like this, I get that quartz makes more sense. It’s probably more accurate and reliable in extreme conditions.
So, I kept reading about the watch. I saw some pictures of its dial with this oxalic anodized aluminum bezel ring around it. I’m not gonna lie, I don’t really know what that means, but it looked pretty neat in the pictures. It’s got this reddish color that I guess is supposed to remind you of Mars. The whole watch is 45mm across and almost 15mm thick. That’s a bit bigger than I usually wear, but I figured I could make an exception for a Mars watch.
Finding a Good Deal
After doing a bunch of research, I decided I had to have this watch. I started looking around online to see where I could buy one. I found this website called Catawiki. I’d never heard of it before, but it looked like an online auction place for all sorts of different stuff. They had a few of these OMEGA Marstimer watches listed, so I created an account and started bidding.
It was a bit of a rush, bidding against other people who wanted the same watch. I ended up winning one of the auctions, and I have to say, I got a pretty good deal on it. I was so stoked when it finally arrived at my doorstep!
Wearing the Marstimer
The first thing I did was, of course, put the watch on my wrist. It’s definitely bigger than what I’m used to, but it doesn’t feel too heavy thanks to that titanium case. The strap is comfortable, and I really like how the whole thing looks. I spent some time playing around with the different functions, setting the time for both Earth and Mars. I don’t know when I’ll ever need to know the time on Mars, but it’s still pretty awesome to have that capability on my wrist.
- First Impressions
- It’s big, but not too heavy.
- The strap is comfortable.
- The Mars time function is really cool.
Overall, I’m really happy with my purchase. It’s a unique watch with a cool story behind it, and it’s definitely a conversation starter. I’ve been wearing it almost every day since I got it, and I think it’s going to be a favorite in my collection for a long time to come. For me, this watch definitely worth the money and effort.
